Kenny and Jean
01/03/2023

Grateful Patient Story - Kenny Dexter

Kenny and his wife, Jean, have been married for 44 years. The past few have been challenging, but their dedication and support of each other have never wavered.

In May, Kenny retired after a 44-year tenure at Wallace Forge in Canton. Over the past two years, Jean battled serious health challenges and was only home for 32 days in 2022. Through it all, Kenny was her biggest supporter, even as he faced his own unexpected health diagnosis.

After discovering a lump in his chest area, Kenny was encouraged by Jean get an extra check-up. A biopsy confirmed that Kenny had stage 1B breast cancer, and he underwent a lumpectomy in December 2021, followed by radiation and testing. Unfortunately, five days after ringing the bell to signal the end of his breast cancer treatment, Kenny learned he had another type of cancer.

Dr. Sabrina Shilad, medical director of Aultman Cancer and Breast Programs, spotted something abnormal in a routine scan. In June 2022, Kenny faced surgery for kidney cancer, and two weeks later, he was admitted for blood clots in his right lung.

Today, Kenny is in remission and continues regular check ups and medication to reduce the risk of a cancer recurrence. His son, daughter-in-law and a friend help him with chores and stop by daily to visit.

Kenny shares that having two different types of cancer and various complications was difficult, but he remains positive and grateful. Kenny thanks Dr. Shilad, Dr. Scott McGee and the entire Aultman Radiation Department for their kindness and guidance throughout his cancer journey.

When asked what he would say to someone who hears the words “you have cancer” Kenny said, “Take a deep breath – don’t panic – but get help immediately and face it head on.” Kenny knows his cancer was treatable because it was found early, and he encourages other men to stay current with their self-exams and screenings.
