Project SEARCH Interns Gain Experience and Confidence

Aultman Health Foundation participates in the Project SEARCH internship program. It gives academically, physically and mentally challenged people the chance to gain workplace experience, so they can obtain permanent employment in the community.

“Project SEARCH gives interns the skills, experience and confidence they need to secure employment here at Aultman and at other local companies,” said Aultman HR Diversity and Inclusion Director Lisa Johnson, who facilitates Aultman’s participation in Project SEARCH. “The interns assist with systematic and physical tasks, supporting Aultman’s productivity.”

Siffrin, the nonprofit organization that helps disabled people find work and housing, launched a Project SEARCH program at Aultman in January 2009. Since that time, more than 50 Project SEARCH interns have contributed in Aultman departments including Laundry, Environmental Services, Pharmacy, Medical Records, Human Resources, Information Desk, Purchasing and Central Services.

“To be a Project SEARCH participant, interns must be 18-30 years old and have earned high school credits,” Lisa explained. “It’s a big commitment: they must agree to a yearlong, unpaid internship at Aultman.”

Each year, Aultman’s Project SEARCH interns are honored at a graduation ceremony. The event includes remarks from former Project SEARCH interns, an inspirational video and the presentation of graduation certificates. “The event is always packed, and it is great to see so many Aultman employees supporting the Project SEARCH interns.” Lisa offered.

Aultman hired one intern from the most recent graduating class, and others have been hired at companies including Walmart, the Canton mayor’s office and AVI Food Systems. We’re proud of all of the Project SEARCH interns!
