Taking Charge of Your Fall Health
The nights are getting colder, the leaves are starting to change and your breath is suddenly visible when you leave for work or school in the morning, which can only mean one thing – fall has arrived.
Each year, the seasonal transition runs an unpredictable-yet-familiar course as the summer heat yields to the tilt of the earth, and while you’re breaking out your warmer wardrobe for the dwindling temperatures, you should consider breaking out your fall health habits as well. Here are some habits that can help you make the most of your health this season.
Get plenty of sleep. Fall is a great time to reevaluate your sleep schedule, as your finely tuned circadian rhythm naturally reacts to the decreasing daylight to help you feel sleepy earlier. Since most morning schedules are more rigid than evening ones, consider going to bed earlier. Seven solid hours of sleep a night is enough to strengthen your immune system, improve your mood and increase your energy in daily life. Shoot for this goal, especially during the fall months.
Wash your hands often. With the fall comes an onslaught of new and dormant germs and viruses that your body isn’t used to, so you’re more likely to get sick. Washing your hands often, avoiding touching railings and other public surfaces and keeping your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth can all help prevent you from becoming ill or coming down with the dreaded cold or seasonal flu. Speaking of the flu…
Get a flu shot. Healthy habits can only take you so far. Getting your flu shot will ensure the best protection against the flu strains that are predicted to make their rounds each year. Even if you do come down with the flu later in the season, having a flu shot will lessen the severity of the flu and its symptoms.
Enjoy the outdoors. Typically, fall brings some of the year’s best outdoor weather, bridging the gap between summer’s unpleasant heat and winter’s unpleasant lack of it. Take advantage of the season by going outside, playing a pick-up game of football or basketball or just hiking at your favorite local trail. Getting plenty of exercise will help you make the most of your health during this beautiful season.
