Healthy Lungs

Strengthen Your Lungs for Life

October is Healthy Lung Month, an opportunity to learn more about the vital role lungs play in our overall well-being. Not only do our lungs provide the oxygen we need to survive, but they also remove excess carbon dioxide from the body and help the immune system by filtering out harmful substances. Keli Gemma, MSN, RN of Aultman Deuble Heart & Vascular Hospital, shares details on how to keep your lungs functioning at their best.

As we head into flu season, it is essential to do everything we can to keep our respiratory systems strong. As the centerpiece of our respiratory system, the lungs are constantly working to filter out waste and ensure our tissues and cells are being properly oxygenated throughout our bloodstream.

While we don’t actively think about it, we take about 23,000 breaths per day. One of the best defenses against flu-related complications is to protect our lungs. Here are some practical tips to help keep your lungs healthy this season.

‎Stop smoking. For current smokers, quitting is the most efficient way to improve lung function. Just 24 hours after you stop smoking, your body begins to repair the damage that smoking caused. Avoid secondhand smoke, too. Being around secondhand smoke can cause a wide range of chronic diseases and infections.

Stay up to date on vaccinations. The flu shot is your first line of defense. It reduces your risk of getting sick and lessens the severity if you do catch the flu. This is especially important for those with preexisting lung conditions such as COPD, asthma, emphysema or any other chronic lung condition.

Practice good hygiene. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use hand sanitizer when soap isn't available. Avoid touching your face. Wear a mask in crowded places if flu activity is high in your area or if you must be around someone who is sick. Stay home when you are sick!

Exercise regularly. Consistent exercise strengthens your heart and lungs over time. Improved fitness enhances your body's ability to transport oxygen to your muscles, making them more efficient. You’ll notice that shortness of breath lessens when you exercise regularly. You can also exercise your lungs through deep breathing to help their overall strength and endurance.

Strengthen your immune system. A strong immune system helps keep your lungs resilient. You can boost your body's defenses by eating nutrient-rich foods such as leafy greens, citrus fruits, garlic and lean proteins. Stay hydrated to keep mucus membranes moist and protective. Get at least seven to nine hours of sleep per night so your body can repair and defend itself. Manage stress through mindfulness, exercise or deep breathing techniques.

Keep your air clean. Indoor air quality matters, especially during colder months when we spend more time inside. Use an air purifier with a HEPA filter. When you can, ventilate your home by opening windows. Keep humidity levels balanced (30-50%) to prevent irritation. For cleaner air, dust regularly and change air filters when needed.

Know when to seek help. Visit your healthcare provider regularly for checkups. Sometimes symptoms can become more serious very quickly, so be sure to seek help from a healthcare provider if you notice common flu symptoms like:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Chest pain/tightness
  • High fever that does not improve with medication

By following these evidence-based practice guidelines and recommendations, you can significantly reduce the risk of severe respiratory complications and maintain optimal lung health throughout flu season.
