Stay Active This Winter
Many of us start the new year with lofty exercise goals, but freezing temperatures make it harder to stay active at this time of year.
Although winter’s cold weather and shorter daylight hours can be challenging, it’s important to stay physically active. Not only will you remain on track with your fitness goals and improve your physical health, but you will also improve your mental health.
Regular physical activity, no matter the season, helps you sleep better, reduces anxiety and may even boost your immune function. Physical activity lowers your blood pressure, strengthens your bones and muscles and lowers your risk for Type 2 diabetes and many types of cancer. It can even help keep your mind sharper as you age.
To help you stay active during the long, cold winter months, check out these six tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
-
Watch the weather forecast and prepare for the week ahead, planning your winter activity accordingly.
-
Wear several layers of comfortable clothing so you can easily remove items as you get warmer.
-
Go for a nature walk. Take a stroll around a neighborhood or park, where you can get out and enjoy nature. And of course, if it’s a cold day, layer up!
-
Try an online workout. Consider tuning in to a TV, online or social media workout class. There are hundreds of free or low-cost exercise video options available.
-
Do some chores. If the weather is too bad to go out, look for ways to be physically active indoors. Housework counts as a physical activity.
-
Look for volunteer opportunities that involve physical activity, such as walking dogs for elderly neighbors or shoveling snow. Help others while you help yourself!
The CDC recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intense physical activity each week. This doesn’t have to be overwhelming.
Break it up into smaller amounts – 30 minutes for five days a week can be broken down even further. Consider two 15-minute walks a day or three 10-minute exercise sessions to get your 30 minutes.
Don’t use the weather as an excuse. Plan ahead, be creative and get your physical activity this winter!
