September Is National Yoga Awareness Month
Yoga is a discipline that began in India about 5,000 years ago. The exercises can involve holding poses, which strengthens muscles. Yoga can also involve gentle stretching, which keeps you flexible. In recent years, yoga has really caught on in America, and it seems to be a trend that is here to stay. Why is that?
It’s for anybody. People of all fitness levels can benefit from yoga. New practitioners can modify the poses and stretches so they don’t injure themselves, and they can even begin by sitting in a chair! People who want a more challenging workout can try Ashtanga yoga classes for a more fast-paced approach.
It’s not a competition. The image of what a yogi is “supposed” to be intimidates many people. The reality is that yoga is about working at your level at the moment. With practice, you will improve. You will be become stronger and more flexible.
It can help with a lot of health issues. The gentle movement, strengthening and stretching used in yoga can help improve many problems people suffer, such as poor circulation, lower back pain and headaches. Yoga can also improve your mood by decreasing tension and stress.
It can improve your concentration. Yoga emphasizes focusing on your breath while you hold poses. This can help improve your focus and concentration throughout the rest of your day.
It may reduce your risk of falls. Practicing yoga can improve your balance and stability by strengthening your core muscles.
Yoga can help you get fit for life. The stronger and more flexible you are, the easier daily tasks become. Carrying groceries, picking up your child or reaching for something on a shelf will become easier with time.
Ready to get started? First, talk with your doctor before starting any new exercise program. Next, you can find a class. Many community centers, gyms and independent yoga studios offer classes for all fitness levels. Make sure you choose an experienced teacher who can help you modify the exercises for your ability.
Practice yoga regularly, and you will begin to see the benefits!
