Pedestrian Safety
Walking is a great way to get some exercise or run quick errands nearby, but it is important for everyone – walkers and drivers – to be aware of their surroundings. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 6,516 pedestrian fatalities nationally in 2020. The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported 176 pedestrian fatalities in Ohio during 2021. That is greater than a 25% increase from 2019!
Tips for Walkers
First, it is important to pay attention: look left, look right, look left again before crossing the street. Before crossing the street, be sure to make eye contact with drivers. Wear bright colored clothing while walking outside during the day. Eliminate distractions while walking outside by putting away electronic devices such as cell phones, ear buds and games. Always walk on the sidewalk or pathways where available and cross only at street corners. Walkers should follow all traffic signs and signals. Stay visible to drivers – do not walk into the street from between parked cars or in a parking lot. If you are walking on your own, let someone know the route you will take. Avoid trips and falls by being aware of things or people in your walking path. If you are walking at night, wear light colored clothing or reflective materials so you are visible to drivers and other pedestrians.
Tips for Drivers
Drivers play a role in pedestrian safety, too! If you are driving, make sure to look out for pedestrians everywhere, all the time! Be extra cautious when backing up. If you have a back-up camera, use it to make sure all is clear. Make sure to follow the speed limit and use slower speed limits in school zones and neighborhoods. Always yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. Never pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk.
There are a lot of moving parts in daily traffic, and it is up to everyone to behave in a safe manner. Following all posted traffic laws, in addition to these tips, will help reduce the number of accidents and injuries.
