Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
03/06/2023

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Did you know that colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the U.S.? It is also the third-leading cause of cancer death in both men and women. More than half of all colorectal cancers are linked to risk factors that can be changed. These include excess body weight, lack of physical activity, smoking and drinking alcohol. Diets that include large amounts of red meat or processed meats increase risk.

Risk can be reduced by:

  • Getting regular screenings.
  • Staying at a healthy weight.
  • Getting regular exercise.
  • Eating a healthy diet that includes fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
  • Avoiding or limiting alcohol.
  • Avoiding tobacco.

Screening and early detection are essential in the fight against colon cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends the following for people at average risk for colorectal cancer:

  • Men and women should start regular screening at age 45.
  • Screenings should continue through the age of 75 for those in good health.
  • People ages 76 – 85 should discuss screening options with their doctor.
  • People at high risk of colorectal cancer based on family or personal history or other factors may need to start screenings before the age of 45.

You can learn more about colorectal cancer risk factors, prevention and screening by visiting www.cancer.org/cancer/colon-rectal-cancer.
