Keeping Family Holidays Joyful
Getting together with family over the holidays can be great for your mental and physical health. There’s plenty of joy in being surrounded by people you love. But family gatherings can also be stressful – you may have a relative who stirs up conflict, for example, or there may be sensitive topics in your life that you wish people wouldn’t ask about.
Here are strategies to cope:
Set boundaries. Know your limits and situations that make you uncomfortable, and don’t be afraid to gently speak up. It’s OK to limit the amount of time you spend at family events, for example.
During family gatherings, politely steer conversations away from controversial topics like politics or personal decisions if they tend to create tension. And if a relationship with a family member is particularly strained, limit the amount of time you spend together.
Share responsibilities. When you’re hosting, don’t try to do everything yourself. Make it clear what you need help with at a gathering, whether it’s setting out food or cleaning up. If you’re attending an event that someone else is hosting, cheerfully pitch in when you’re asked to help.
Be inclusive. Holidays can be tough for those who are grieving, lonely or facing challenges. Show empathy and understanding. If multiple cultures or religions are represented in your extended family, find ways to honor everyone's customs.
Focus on gratitude. Remind yourself and others of the value of being with loved ones, even if there are disagreements. Thank family members for their contributions, big or small.
