Healthy Skin Care

November is National Healthy Skin Month, a good reminder to pay attention to your skin, learn about skin care and adopt habits that can lead to a lifetime of healthier skin. Stephen A. Lopez, M.D., with Aultman Medical Group Plastic Surgery, shares advice for keeping your skin at its best.

Healthy skincare is essential for maintaining a radiant and youthful complexion, and it all begins with a consistent routine tailored to your skin's unique needs.

One of the most fundamental steps in any skincare regimen is cleansing. Choosing a gentle cleanser that suits your skin type – whether it's oily, dry or sensitive – helps remove dirt, excess oils and impurities without stripping away the skin's natural moisture.

Following up with a hydrating moisturizer helps lock in moisture, keeping the skin soft and supple.

Don't forget sunscreen! Daily application of broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is crucial to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, preventing premature aging, dark spots and skin cancer.

In addition to a basic routine, healthy skin also benefits from occasional exfoliation and nourishing treatments. Exfoliating one to two times per week helps remove dead skin cells, allowing new skin to surface and promoting a smoother texture.

Natural ingredients like vitamin C, retinol and hyaluronic acid can further enhance skin health by boosting collagen production, brightening dark spots and providing deep hydration.

Nutrition also plays a key role. A balanced diet rich in antioxidants, healthy fats and hydration supports the skin from the inside out. With a combination of the right products, healthy habits and consistent care, you can achieve glowing, healthy skin at any age.
