Healthy Relationships
Relationship Wellness Month in February encourages people to be proactive about creating caring, mutually respectful romantic relationships. Here, Liesa Kaye, LISW-S, of Aultman Medical Group Behavioral Health and Counseling Center, shares advice on how to have a healthy relationship.
Building a healthy relationship requires open communication and mutual respect. At the core of any strong partnership is the ability to communicate openly about feelings, needs and concerns.
Regularly checking in with each other fosters understanding and prevents misunderstandings from escalating. Active listening is equally important, as it allows each partner to feel heard and valued.
Whether you're discussing a small issue or a larger problem, making time to talk and genuinely understand each other's perspectives can build trust and deepen the connection.
Another essential aspect of a healthy relationship is setting boundaries and respecting each other's individuality. While it's important to spend quality time together, it's also crucial to maintain a sense of independence.
This means giving each other space to pursue personal interests, friendships and goals. Healthy relationships thrive when both partners are supported in their personal growth, which ultimately benefits the relationship. By recognizing and respecting each other’s boundaries, couples can foster an environment where both individuals feel free to be their authentic selves.
Finally, showing appreciation and practicing kindness is a cornerstone of lasting love. Small gestures of kindness, whether through compliments, acts of service or simply saying "thank you," can go a long way in making your partner feel valued.
It’s also important to celebrate successes, whether big or small, and support each other through challenges. Acts of love and appreciation build emotional intimacy, strengthen the bond and create a positive cycle that can help the relationship weather any storms.
In a healthy relationship, both partners feel cherished and are motivated to nurture the relationship over time.
