Health Benefits of Peppermint
One of the simple pleasures of the holiday season is the chance to enjoy all things peppermint. More than just a delicious addition to seasonal goodies, peppermint may also offer surprising health benefits.
For starters, peppermint is an antioxidant that helps neutralize free radicals in your body, helping to ward off cell damage. But that’s just the beginning.
Here’s a rundown from Stacee Remlinger, RN of the AultCare health and wellness team on some of the many benefits of peppermint, particularly peppermint oil and tea.
- Peppermint helps kill the bacteria in your mouth that cause bad breath.
- Peppermint oil can help relieve nausea, indigestion, bloating and gas. It also stimulates bile production and relaxes the muscles of the digestive tract.
- Peppermint helps with irritable bowel syndrome, including abdominal pains and irregular bowel movements.
- Peppermint tea can help clear nasal congestion and soothe a sore throat. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that may reduce swelling in the respiratory tract.
- Peppermint oil can be used on the skin to relieve muscle pain, headaches and skin irritation.
- Peppermint may improve alertness, focus and memory. It has been shown to increase blood flow to the brain.
- Peppermint may boost the immune system.
Keep in mind, though, that while peppermint is generally safe for most people, it can cause side effects in some individuals. It is important to consult with a healthcare professional before using peppermint, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or are taking any medications.
Once you know you’re in the clear on peppermint, take a moment to savor this popular flavor of the season. During this hectic time of year, a hot cup of peppermint tea can be a great way to relax, wind down – and benefit your health.
