Give Me Five (with a Clean Hand)!

In the midst of flu, RSV, COVID and holiday get-togethers, it’s especially important to be mindful of the health of our friends, patients and families this time of year. Spreading infections and illness at home, work and school can be largely deterred or avoided by simply keeping our hands clean.

Studies show that hand washing can prevent one in three diarrhea-related illnesses and one in five respiratory infections, such as a cold or the flu. Germs can enter your body through the eyes, nose and mouth, so make it a priority to wash your hands:

  • Before, during and after preparing food.
  • Before eating.
  • Before and after caring for someone who is sick.
  • After using the bathroom or changing diapers.
  • After blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
  • After touching an animal, animal food or feces.
  • After touching garbage.

Hand washing is considered one of the most effective precautions we can take to stop the spread of disease – and it’s so easy! Keep these five steps in mind as you watch the germs go down the drain.

1. Wet your hands with clean, running water, turn off the tap and apply soap.
2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together. Don’t forget the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails.
3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds, or hum the “Happy Birthday” song twice.
4. Rinse your hands under running water.
5. Dry your hands using a clean towel. Before discarding your used towel, use it to turn off the water faucet.
