Get Back on Track
If overindulging on your favorite treats over Thanksgiving weekend has you feeling bloated and lethargic, take heart – you can get back on track with healthy habits that keep your energy up through the holiday season.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers these tips for enjoying your favorite treats as part of a healthy holiday, particularly when you must manage your blood sugar.
Plan ahead. During the holiday season, you will likely be surrounded by tempting treats. Go into holiday gatherings with a plan and follow through. For example, bring a healthy dish you can enjoy at potlucks. When festive meals are scheduled later than your normal mealtime, snack on low-calorie, non-starchy vegetables beforehand. If you decide to have a favorite sweet treat before or after a meal, cut back on other carbs such as bread during the meal. And if you do slip up, don’t dwell on it – shake it off and go back to healthy eating.
Make healthy choices at buffets. Choose a small plate, if possible, so that you keep portions under control. Start with vegetables. Then, take only your favorite foods and leave the buffet table. Socialize with your dinner companions and eat slowly – your brain takes 20 minutes to realize you are full.
Savor your favorites. Don’t deprive yourself of your favorite foods, especially those that you can only get at this time of year. Take a small serving, slow down and savor it.
Get moving. Encourage your friends and family to be active with you this holiday season. Go walking whenever the weather cooperates, especially after holiday meals. Exercise not only helps keep the weight off, but it also can lift your mood and reduce stress.
Get your sleep. Don’t give in to the temptation to cheat on sleep to finish your holiday tasks. If you miss out on sleep, you’ll be more tempted to indulge in high-fat, high-sugar foods. Try to get seven to eight hours of sleep each night. You’ll feel refreshed and ready to celebrate the holidays with family and friends.
