Being Kind Boosts Mental Health

This World Kindness Day on Nov. 13, do something nice for someone, and you just might see health benefits.

According to recent research, acts of kindness can help boost your mood, reduce stress and possibly even lessen symptoms of depression and anxiety. Not only that – acts of kindness also strengthen your social connections, which contribute to general well-being.

So get out there and be kind! Here are suggestions from the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation for adding simple acts of goodwill into your life.

At Home

  • Show respect for others in your home by listening more than talking and being sincere in your praise.
  • Give someone in your family your undivided attention.
  • Offer to help someone in the family complete a difficult job or task.
  • Let someone else have the first helping of a meal or the last treat.
  • Sincerely apologize when you’ve hurt someone’s feelings.
  • Play a game or join in a hobby that someone in your family enjoys.

In the Workplace

  • Greet colleagues cheerfully.
  • Write a note of gratitude to someone who has made your job easier.
  • Make sure that everyone has a chance to be heard when you are in a meeting.
  • Celebrate successes.
  • Create time in your day to connect with someone.
  • Send a colleague an encouraging message.
