Are You at Risk?
November is American Diabetes Awareness Month. This observance brings light to the long-term disease and its impact on millions of Americans. According to the American Diabetes Association, more than 38 million Americans currently have diabetes and nearly 3,300 more are diagnosed every day. In addition, close to 100 million adults in the U.S. are prediabetic. Are you at risk?
One quick way to find out is to take this 60-second Type 2 diabetes risk test, offered by the American Diabetes Association.
If you are at risk for Type 2 diabetes, remember that prevention and knowledge are key! It’s not too late to take steps to prevent diabetes. The best place to start is with healthy eating. Be sure to get lots of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats and quality carbohydrates. Aim for fewer processed foods and less added sugar, and stick with water or zero-calorie beverages.
Physical activity is just as important. Aim for about 30 minutes of walking, biking or your favorite form of exercise most days of the week. And if you have weight to lose, remember that taking off just 10 pounds can help lower your risk.
If you are at risk, or if you have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, remember that we are here for you! Aultman Diabetes Education and Nutrition Therapy can see you in the office for your diabetes and diet needs. With correct treatment and recommended modified lifestyle changes, many patients make a big difference in their risk factors for diabetes complications.
“We know that diabetes can be a challenge and your initial diagnosis can be overwhelming,” said Mechelle Metzgar, Aultman diabetes educator. “Our program places you first, giving you the necessary education and tools to support healthy self-management. We even offer education and support groups.”
Talk to your primary care provider about a referral and then call us for an appointment at 330-363-5235. You can also visit diabetes.org for more helpful information on diabetes.
