UV Safety Month: Prevent Sun Damage to Your Skin
Summer is the time to soak up the sun! But the sun, while a source of warmth and light, also harbors the potential for skin damage. July is Ultraviolet (UV) Safety Month, a reminder to review your skincare habits and make sure you are protecting yourself from the sun’s harmful rays.
“Sun damage occurs when UV rays penetrate the skin, causing a range of issues from sunburns to long-term damage like premature aging and even skin cancer,” said Shannon Urena, PA-C, of Aultman Medical Group Plastic Surgery. “UV radiation damages the DNA in skin cells, leading to mutations that can result in various skin disorders.”
While many people enjoy basking in the sun for its mood-lifting effects, it's crucial to be mindful of the potential harm it can cause to your skin.
Prevention is key when it comes to safeguarding your skin against sun damage. According to Urena, sunscreen tops the list of prevention strategies.
“One of the most effective strategies is consistent and proper application of sunscreen,” she said. “Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 30 or higher, which shields against both UVA and UVB rays.”
Applying sunscreen generously and reapplying it every two hours – or more frequently if swimming or sweating – helps maintain its effectiveness.
Comprehensive sun protection also includes:
- Seeking shade during peak sun hours, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Wearing protective clothing such as wide-brimmed hats and long sleeves.
- Wearing sunglasses that block UV rays.
Sunlamps and tanning beds also emit UV rays; you should never use them.
“By adopting these preventive measures, you can enjoy the sun safely while preserving the health and youthfulness of your skin for years to come,” Urena said.
