The Importance of Screening for Depression
National Depression Screening Day is recognized annually in October. Liesa Kaye, MSW, LISW-S of Aultman Medical Group Behavioral Health and Counseling Center, describes the benefits of routinely screening for this common mental health disorder.
Depression is one of the most common mental health disorders worldwide, affecting people of all ages, backgrounds and lifestyles. Despite its prevalence, many individuals suffering from depression go undiagnosed and untreated – often due to stigma, lack of awareness or limited access to care. That’s why screening for depression is a crucial first step in identifying symptoms early and connecting individuals to the support they need.
Screening involves the use of simple, validated questionnaires (Patient Health Questionnaire 9 or PHQ-9) – often administered by healthcare providers – to assess mood, energy levels, sleep patterns and other key indicators. These screenings are quick, noninvasive and can be performed in various settings, including primary care clinics, schools, community health centers and behavioral/mental health counseling offices.
When done routinely, depression screening can:
- Help detect early signs of mental health struggles
- Promote timely intervention and treatment referrals
- Reduce the risk of complications such as substance abuse, poor work or academic performance and suicidal thoughts
- Encourage open conversations about mental health and reduce stigma
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends regular depression screening for adults and adolescents, especially those with risk factors such as a family history of mental illness, chronic health conditions or recent life stressors.
Early detection can make a significant difference. If you or someone you care about is struggling with low mood, fatigue or a loss of interest in daily activities, don’t wait. Talk to a healthcare provider about screening options – it’s a small step that can lead to meaningful, life-changing support.
