Take a Break This Labor Day Weekend
Everyone needs a break from their normal routine. Even one day away from your usual responsibilities can help refresh your mind, boost creativity and prevent burnout.
So spend your extra time off this weekend doing something that brings you joy and helps improve your overall well-being. Here are just a few healthy ways to use Labor Day weekend – or an upcoming day off work – to relax and rejuvenate.
Connect With Others
Whether you’re meeting a friend for coffee or having family over for a picnic, nurturing positive relationships has long-term beneficial effects on mental and physical health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, high-quality relationships can help people live longer, healthier lives.
That’s because friends and family provide support in immeasurable ways, from lending a listening ear to babysitting on short notice to providing a ride to the grocery store.
Dedicate this Labor Day weekend to spending time with people you care about. You don’t have to host the traditional large picnic – unless you want to. Reach out to friends and family just to chat, go for a walk, play board games or simply hang out.
Spend Time Outdoors
Take advantage of pleasant weather while we have it. With autumn just around the corner, it won’t be long until the snow flies and it’s dark by early evening, making outdoor activities more difficult.
Studies show that being outside in a natural setting calms our minds by letting us escape from our usual routine. We tend to be more active when we’re outdoors, too, which is good for our physical health.
Limit your kids’ screen time this weekend and walk, hike, ride bikes or visit a local zoo or park – whatever you love to do outside – as a family. If you don’t have kids at home, invite family and friends along on your outdoor adventure.
If you’re going to a picnic, bring along a Frisbee, soccer ball or outdoor games and encourage people to be active.
Make Time for Self-Care
Find some time on Labor Day weekend just for you – even if it’s only half an hour. Taking time for yourself is vital to your health and well-being. If you have kids, trading childcare responsibilities with a friend or neighbor may help you carve out a little time to be alone.
Turn off your phone, computer and other devices to disconnect from the digital world and do something you enjoy. Read a good book, watch a classic movie, listen to music or indulge in a favorite hobby.
When Tuesday rolls around, you’ll feel more refreshed and ready to tackle the week ahead.
