Sunglasses – Not Just Fashion

Whether small and sleek or large and eye-catching, sunglasses are a summer fashion staple. They’re a fun way to express your individual style, but did you know that sunglasses also play a key role in protecting your eyes from ultraviolet (UV) radiation?

UV radiation is a type of light that comes from the sun. UV rays are dangerous because they damage our skin and eyes. Certain types of light bulbs like those used in tanning beds or nail dryers also emit UV rays.

There are three types of UV rays:

  • UVA reaches deep into the skin layers, playing a role in how our skin ages and forms wrinkles. UVA also causes cell damage that can lead to some types of skin cancer.

  • UVB is the main cause of sunburn, damaging the skin’s outer layers. Exposure to these rays is linked to most skin cancers.

  • UVC rays are dangerous, but they don’t reach our skin. Earth’s ozone layer absorbs UVC rays before they reach the surface.

UV rays are linked to cataracts and other eye damage. Water, snow, glass and sand reflect UV, which increases your risk. Even on cloudy days, UV rays can reach your skin and eyes. Wearing sunglasses reduces your risk.

Selecting the right sunglasses is important for maximum protection year-round. Here’s what to look for:

  • A sticker or tag saying the sunglasses block 100% of UV radiation or UV absorption up to 400nm.

  • Glasses with a clear UV coating. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Optometric Association, mirror coating and gradient tinted lenses don’t offer UV protection.

  • Wraparound sunglasses, which keep light from shining in through the sides.
