Specialized Heart Care from a Special Team

Aultman’s Specialized Heart & Valve Center offers a wide array of services to our community members dealing with difficult cardiac issues. The main focus of the center is treating structural heart disease, which is an exciting new field in cardiovascular medicine. The multidisciplinary team offers diagnosis and treatment options for a full spectrum of conditions, while focusing on the unique needs of each patient.

Many of the treatment options are catheter-based, which means they are performed with small incisions rather than open-heart surgery. This exciting development means patients have less-invasive surgical options, and it’s especially good news for those who may not be good candidates for some procedures.

One of the newest and most exciting procedures is called a transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or TAVR. This minimally invasive procedure replaces the valve via catheter without actually removing the old valve. The need to open the chest itself is eliminated, which is great news for those who are considered intermediate or high-risk patients for standard valve replacement surgery. An additional benefit of the TAVR procedure is the quick recovery, which is usually just a three-to-five-day stay in the hospital.

This new option gives hope to many heart patients in Stark County and beyond, and more importantly, it will improve the quality of their lives. One patient who has already experienced the TAVR procedure was very happy with his care here at Aultman. To read Dallas’ story, click here.

The treatment of structural heart disease is rapidly evolving. And as new treatment options become available, we will keep our focus on the unique needs of each patient. Our experienced team of interventionalists, cardiac surgeons, cardiac anesthesiologists and cardiac imaging specialists collaborate closely on the care of each patient. They truly strive to put “more heart” into caring for every individual – keeping in mind that each patient has different needs.
