Shopping Safely in Person and Online
Gift list? Check. Wallet? Check. A plan for safe and secure shopping?
Make sure that last box is one that you can check this holiday season. Whether you’re braving the crowds in person or online, there are simple steps you can take to have a safe shopping experience.
In the Stores
If possible, don’t shop alone. The old adage is true: There is strength in numbers. If you do split up while shopping, designate a meeting time and place, as cellphone signals may not work inside malls and larger retailers. Many stores have a public Wi-Fi network, but always double-check before you join it – scammers can set up fake networks with real-sounding names to steal your information.
While shopping, keep your purse or wallet close to your body. It’s easier for crooks to snatch a handbag from a cart than one slung across your body or under a coat. Also: Use a debit or credit card or digital wallet when you can. When you flash large amounts of cash, it can attract the wrong kind of attention.
Never leave your bags unattended – especially if you stop to use the restroom or eat in a food court. Consider putting expensive items such as jewelry in less conspicuous bags than the one that advertises the store name. And when you load the bags into your car, you can further disguise them by covering them with a towel or old blanket.
In the parking lot, stay aware of your surroundings. Park in well-lit areas and lock your doors. If you see something suspicious, report it to store security.
Online
Shop on reputable, well-known websites – especially ones you’ve used before. You can check with the Better Business Bureau or other consumer sites to research new-to-you retailers. Or you can run a simple search using the retailer’s name; focus on reputation and customer service, as well as shipping and return policies.
Remember that if it seems too good to be true – whether it’s item availability or pricing – it probably is. Scammers will use this year’s “hot” toys and electronics to draw you in and make you think you’re getting a great deal.
When you’re on a site, check for the lock icon in the URL address bar. The first few letters of the address should be https – the “s” indicates a more secure experience and that your information is encrypted. Beware of pop-up ads or links that direct you to other sites to complete your purchase.
Be smart about paying online. A common tactic of scammers is to request payment by wire transfer or gift card. Regularly check your credit or debit card statements during the holiday season. If you notice a discrepancy, report it immediately.
When online items are shipped to you, make sure someone is home for the delivery. “Porch pirates” especially watch for boxes with electronics (TVs, laptops, gaming systems). Consider using a ship-to-store option if you are unable to be there when items deliver.
