Falls Prevention Part 1
09/23/2024

Reduce Your Risk for Falling

More than 1 in 4 people ages 65 and older fall each year, according to the National Institute on Aging, yet many falls can be prevented.

Sept. 23-27 is Falls Prevention Awareness Week, a nationwide observance that focuses on preventing falls, reducing the risk of falls and helping older adults live without fear of falling. Here is advice on how to safeguard against falls from Lori Leonard, BSN, RN CEN, injury prevention and outreach coordinator with Aultman Trauma Services.

Falls are not a normal part of aging, but as people age, they may become excessively worried about falling. Concerns about falling can enter your life slowly and gradually, or they can come on suddenly. This is especially likely if you or someone you know has had a bad fall.

Fear of falling can control your feelings and actions. Once fear takes over, it can convince you to restrict your life in many ways, resulting in a loss of your basic activities, social interactions and problem-solving skills.

Fear could ultimately take away your independence and lead you to become isolated and depressed. To overcome concerns about falling, you need mental and physical skills.

You can reduce your risk of falling by paying attention to the Three H’s: Your home, your health and your habits.

Home

Look at each room and learn how to recognize and remove hazards that can cause you to slip or trip. Small and large improvements will make your home safer in the long run.

  • Are rooms and passageways kept clear and uncluttered?

  • Is there adequate lighting in hallways, rooms and the top and bottom of stairs?

  • Are frequently needed kitchen items within easy reach?

  • Do bathtubs and showers have at least one grab bar?

  • Are sturdy handrails available on all stairs?

Health

You can significantly reduce your risk of falling by making healthy choices and having ongoing and honest conversations with your healthcare providers.

  • Do you know the side effects of all medications you take? Example side effects include drowsiness, dizziness and weakness.

  • Do you engage in physical activity daily? Walking, exercising, working around your house and riding a bike are all good ways to incorporate physical activity into your day. To get the most benefit from physical activity, choose activities that contribute to your endurance, strength and flexibility.

  • Do you have annual vision and hearing exams?

Habits

Our bodies change as we age, and so should the ways we do certain everyday tasks.

  • Do you wipe up spills quickly?

  • When carrying items, do you leave an arm free to hold on to railings?

  • Do you have a friend or relative who checks on you daily?

  • Do you always turn on a light when entering a room or stairway?

  • Do you take your time when changing from a seated position to a standing position?

  • Do you talk comfortably with your family and physician about falls and prevention strategies?

  • Do you ask for help when needed?
