PTSD and Fireworks

Fireworks may be an electrifying display of patriotism for most Americans, but they can quickly trigger unwelcome memories to our veterans and military personnel suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The holiday can be tricky for veterans because they embrace the patriotic displays, but on the other hand, the loud noises, explosive sounds and smell of powder can easily spark an episode of PTSD.

According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, up to 20 percent of military personnel who served in Iraq or Afghanistan experience PTSD each year. These numbers are startling, but our veterans are getting help to cope with their symptoms.

PTSD patients have learned that their symptoms are usually triggered by the unexpected. Having knowledge of a fireworks display can help them prepare for what to expect and the feelings they may experience. With a little preparation, military personnel who suffer from PTSD can often practice relaxation techniques, use headphones or listen to music as a distraction while still participating in the festivities.

As we begin celebrating our country’s freedom this week, let’s be mindful of our neighbors and more cognizant of how our “red rockets and bombs bursting in air” may affect those suffering from PTSD. Awareness is an important first step toward ensuring an enjoyable holiday for everyone – free of anxiety and fear.
