Norovirus 3
01/27/2025

Protect Yourself From Norovirus

Norovirus, a very contagious disease characterized by vomiting and diarrhea, is surging in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 91 norovirus outbreaks were reported during the week ending Dec. 5, 2024, more than double the number of outbreaks recorded during the same week over the last three years.

Here’s what you need to know to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Norovirus

Norovirus is sometimes called the "stomach flu" or the "stomach bug." However, norovirus illness is not related to the flu. The flu is caused by the influenza virus. Norovirus causes acute gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach or intestines.

Most people with norovirus illness get better within one to three days, but they can still spread the virus for a few days after.

People can get norovirus illness many times in their life because there are many different types of noroviruses. Infection with one type may not protect against other types.

Symptoms and Complications

A person usually develops symptoms 12 to 48 hours after being exposed to norovirus.

The most common symptoms are diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach pain. Some people also experience fever, headache and body aches.

It is important to watch out for dehydration. People with norovirus can vomit or have diarrhea many times a day. This can lead to dehydration – loss of body fluids – especially in young children, older adults and people with other illnesses. Symptoms of dehydration include:

  • Decreased urination

  • Dry mouth and throat

  • Feeling dizzy when standing up

  • Crying with few or no tears

  • Unusual sleepiness or fussiness

Drink plenty of liquids to replace fluid lost from vomiting and diarrhea. Sports drinks and other drinks without caffeine or alcohol can help with mild dehydration. However, these drinks may not replace important nutrients and minerals. Oral rehydration fluids that you can get over the counter are most helpful for mild dehydration.

If you think you or someone you are caring for is severely dehydrated, call your healthcare provider. Severe dehydration may require hospitalization for treatment with IV fluids.

Prevention

Norovirus is very contagious, but you can take steps to protect yourself and others:

  • Wash your hands well and often.

  • Cook shellfish thoroughly and wash fruits and vegetables.

  • Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces.

  • Wash laundry in hot water.

  • Stay home when sick for two days (48 hours) after symptoms stop.

Be aware that:

  • Hand sanitizer does not work well against norovirus.

  • You can use hand sanitizers in addition to hand washing, but hand sanitizer is not a substitute for handwashing.
