Practicing for a Balanced Life
Our lives can seem hectic and over-scheduled, and it feels like we move through our days at a quick pace. Many people feel the effects of this lifestyle as stress. Are you thinking of reducing stress as a New Year’s resolution? Here are some tips to help you find balance in your life.
Get enough rest
When it comes to sleep, stress can put your body into a vicious cycle. When you don’t get enough sleep, it is difficult to cope with the stressful things in your life. In turn, the stress can keep you awake at night. To break the cycle, turn off the devices before bed and start a soothing bed-time ritual that includes listening to soft music or reading.
Eat right
Choose healthy meals and snacks that are low in fat and high in vegetables and fruit. Don’t skip meals.
Keep moving
Exercise helps to burn off the negative energy of stress. Keeping active will make you feel better and will help you get quality sleep at night.
Lift your spirit
Choose an activity that you truly enjoy, and schedule time for it. Whether you’re creating art, refurbishing an antique car or baking, making time for an activity outside of work will help you hit the “reset” button.
Be a lifelong learner
Is there something you’ve always wanted to learn? Sign up for a class! Local colleges and universities offer a wide array of classes, or check your local library for a free introductory program.
Get organized
Clearing the clutter can help you save time and money. Donate, recycle or throw away items that you no longer need or use.
Prioritize your tasks
Make a list of the tasks you need to do in order of priority. Do the most challenging tasks when you have the most energy.
Stay in the present
We become overwhelmed by our fast-paced lives because we worry about what we can’t control. Sometimes our minds dwell on the past, which we can’t change. Sometimes we become anxious about the future. Practicing mindfulness is a way to stay in the present. Focus on your breathing. As you work on a task, let yourself experience the sights, smells and sounds as if this task is completely new to you. This will help ground you in the present.
Finding balance in our lives is about the journey, not the destination. We can experience moments of balance in any given day. By practicing these tips, we can find more moments of balance and contentment throughout each day.
