Low-Dose CT Scans for Early Lung Cancer Detection

The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recently updated its recommendations for lung cancer screening. The current recommendation is that people between the ages of 55-80 who currently smoke, or once smoked but have quit within the past 15 years should undergo annual screening with low-dose computed tomography scan (LDCT). We recommend that you discuss your individual cancer screening needs with your personal physician.

In adults at high risk for lung cancer, routine screening using low-dose CT scan (LDCT) can save lives, but only if they get tested. Lung cancer screening rates are still fairly low in the U.S., but Aultman was making steady progress in screening rates prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. A survey conducted by the American Cancer Society estimates that 35% of Americans have cancelled or delayed routine cancer screening due to COVID-19-related fears and service disruptions. We are working to address missed opportunities for early detection, which in most cases makes treatment more successful.

We know that 2020 was a hectic year for all of us, but we wanted to take this opportunity to let you know Aultman has resumed all services in their full capacity with extra safety precautions in place to keep you safe. Our mission has always been to lead our community to improved health. We hope you take a few minutes today to take care of yourself by discussing lung cancer screening with your physician and scheduling your screening LDCT. We look forward to welcoming you back. Although most insurances cover preventative health care, we recommend that you check with your insurance for specific coverage guidelines.

When you are ready to schedule, call centralized scheduling at (330) 363-6288. If you have already scheduled your LDCT, thank you for making your health and well-being a priority.
