Lightning Safety
Summer heat can bring summer storms, and where there is thunder, there is lightning. Whether you’re splashing at the beach, enjoying an outdoor concert or watching a baseball game, make sure you have a plan for severe weather.
Lightning is a natural phenomenon caused by a buildup of positive and negative ions inside a cloud. When the opposite charges overcome the insulating effect produced by the air, a rapid flash of electricity forms, which we see as lightning.
Lightning causes thunder by heating the surrounding air to a temperature of about 50,000 degrees – hotter than the surface of the sun! This heated air explodes outward, creating a shock wave we hear as thunder.
If you hear thunder, there is lightning, and that means danger – even if the sun is shining. Lightning can strike up to 10 miles beyond where rain is falling. Seek shelter indoors until you no longer hear thunder.
Many weather apps and local radio and television stations will announce severe weather alerts in your area. A thunderstorm watch means that weather conditions are favorable for producing a thunderstorm. A thunderstorm warning means you should take shelter immediately because a thunderstorm has developed in your area. Don’t forget to bring pets inside, as well!
Once inside, stay away from electrical equipment and plumbing during the thunderstorm. Wiring and plumbing are conductors of electricity. If you have a phone with a landline, avoid using it until the storm blows over.
About 300 people are struck by lightning each year, and in about 30 cases it is fatal. Some people have lifelong injuries due to a lightning strike. Taking precautions, listening to weather alerts and finding shelter quickly will help keep you safe.
