How to Stay Healthy While Traveling

Planning a vacation? Whether you’re hanging out at the lake, hiking in the mountains or visiting historic landmarks, staying mindful of your health can make or break your trip. Here are a few tips to keep your summer travels safe and enjoyable.

See your healthcare provider well in advance of the trip.

Check in with your primary care provider if you’re going on a big trip, especially if you’re leaving the country. Your provider will let you know which vaccines you need and help you plan how to manage your chronic health conditions while you’re away.

Check your health insurance.

Contact your health insurance provider to make sure you’re covered for any unexpected health issues while you’re traveling. You may need to purchase supplemental insurance to ensure that you can receive the care you need during your vacation.

Pack wisely.

Pack a personal health kit that includes your prescription and over-the-counter medications in their original containers. If you’re traveling internationally, check ahead of time to make sure the medications you plan to take are legal in the countries you’re visiting.

Bring a first aid kit with bandages, gauze, antiseptic wipes, antibiotic ointment, instant cold packs, gloves, tweezers and any additional items you feel are essential to your health.

Remember sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses to protect against the sun’s harmful rays.

Stay hydrated.

It’s easy to forget to drink enough liquids when you’re on the go. But if you start to get dehydrated, you’ll feel tired and achy. Drink plenty of clean water – it’s the healthiest beverage choice for staying hydrated on your vacation.

Snack smart.

While sweet treats can be tempting, they can make you feel sluggish and bloated. You’ll have more energy for your adventures if you pack healthy snacks for the trip.

Keep fresh fruit, nuts, healthy trail mix and plain popcorn on hand for when hunger hits. If you can’t pack snacks for the trip, healthy choices are usually available in airports and at convenience stores.

Watch what you eat.

Select water and food with care, especially when eating out internationally. Contaminated water can cause diarrhea, vomiting or infections.

Raw food, including unpasteurized dairy products, is especially likely to be contaminated. Raw or undercooked meat, fish, shellfish, eggs and produce can be contaminated with germs, and some fish harvested from tropical waters can transmit toxins even after the fish has been cooked.

See the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Food and Water Precautions for Travelers for more details on what to watch out for.

Remember hygiene.

Pack plenty of hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes. Frequently washing your hands with soap and water is the single best way to prevent the spread of germs and disease. But if soap and water aren’t available, use hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

It’s a good idea to use disinfecting wipes to clean armrests, tray tables and other surfaces before you touch them. And if someone is coughing or sneezing, consider moving to at least a 6-foot distance away from them.

Keep moving.

Plan physical activity. Staying active every day during your travels will help keep your energy up and help you stay on track with your exercise goals.

Take every opportunity to move. For example, if you have plenty of time until your flight starts boarding, walk around the airport. If it’s safe, go for walks in the neighborhood surrounding the place where you’re staying. Build in daily excursions that involve physical activity, such as a stroll on the beach, a walk through a museum or a bicycle ride on local trails.
