How to Avoid Winter Slips and Falls
Winter’s freezing temperatures, ice storms and snowfalls can make walking conditions treacherous. Joseph R. Crewes, PT, DPT, Cert. DN, of Aultman Massillon Therapy Services, offers tips for staying on your feet even on slippery surfaces.
As winter approaches and the weather changes, we see an increased risk of falling. Often, patients are referred to Aultman therapy clinics to help them learn ways to decrease their chances of falling.
Aultman physical therapists are also regularly involved in the care of patients who have fallen. Common injuries from falls include fractures, head injuries and various sprains and strains. In severe cases, individuals may be hospitalized after having a fall.
To prevent falls, wear appropriate footwear outside. When walking on slippery surfaces, take short steps and walk like a penguin with your toes facing outward.
Be sure to give yourself extra time to arrive at your destination. If you can, simply stay home to avoid navigating in bad weather.
If you do fall, take a moment to determine whether you are hurt before getting up. In some cases, rapidly getting up can lead to more injuries. If you are injured, remain in place as long as it is safe and call for help.
These are just a few brief tips on preventing falls. As is the case with most conditions, having a routine strengthening and conditioning program is always beneficial for preventing falls.
If you or someone you know is in need of formal physical therapy to help with injuries from a fall or to reduce the risk of falls, members of Aultman’s skilled clinical staff are available to provide effective, patient-focused one-on-one care at any of our convenient locations.
