Exercise Safety Tips for Winter Weather

On these cold, winter mornings, nothing feels better than staying under the blankets, hitting the snooze button and catching a few extra winks. But staying fit when the flakes are falling in northeast Ohio doesn’t have to be a struggle with the right weather preparations and safety precautions.

Here are a few tips to consider before you go out to enjoy the frosty air.

Check the forecast.

Cold temperatures can put you at risk for developing frostbite or hypothermia. Whether you are going out for a quick jog or a day on the slopes, dress warmly. You can always remove scarves, hats and mittens as necessary.

Layer up.

The goal with layering is to keep the body warm while minimizing sweating. Since controlling your core temperature is important and removing a layer is easy, it’s practical and safer to wear several thin items of clothing rather than wearing one heavy item.

Protect your extremities.

When the temperatures are cold, your body is designed to divert blood flow to your core. This leaves your extremities at risk for frostbite. Be sure to wear gloves, hats and moisture-wicking socks. If you are in freezing temperatures, don’t forget to protect your ears, nose and mouth with a scarf or facemask.

Drink plenty of fluids.

Staying hydrated is just as important in the winter weather as it is when you are basking in the sun. Drink plenty of fluids before you head outside and continue drinking water or sports drinks during your workout – even if you aren’t thirsty.

Wear the right gear.

When facing the winter elements, wearing the right workout gear is especially important. Make sure your shoes or boots have plenty of traction when snow or ice is in the forecast. If you are enjoying activities such as skiing or snowboarding, always wear pads, goggles and a helmet.
