Do You Know These Medical Words?
National Dictionary Day is observed annually on Oct. 16 and marks the birthday of Noah Webster, whom many consider to be the father of the American dictionary. This day celebrates the importance of learning and language and encourages everyone to improve their vocabulary.
To help with that goal, we’ve put together a mini healthcare dictionary. Here are some of the common specialties in the medical field and the organ or body system they focus on:
- Audiology – Hearing
- Cardiology – The heart
- Endocrinology – Endocrine glands
- Gastroenterology – The stomach and intestines
- Gerontology – Aging and older adults
- Gynecology – Women’s reproductive system
- Hematology – Blood and blood-forming organs
- Nephrology – The kidneys
- Neurology – The nervous system, including the brain
- Obstetrics – Pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period
- Oncology – Cancer
- Orthopedics – The skeleton and associated structures, such as tendons and ligaments
- Otolaryngology or Otorhinolaryngology – The ear, nose and throat and related parts of the head and neck
- Pediatrics – Infants, children and adolescents
- Podiatry – The human foot
- Psychiatry – Mental, emotional or behavioral disorders
- Radiology – Radiant energy (including X-rays) or radioactive material in the diagnosis and treatment of disease
- Urology – The urogenital tract
