Domestic Violence Awareness 2
10/10/2025

Confronting Domestic Violence

Domestic violence has devastating effects on survivors and those around them. It is associated with negative health outcomes and mental health issues such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Domestic violence remains a growing issue for Ohio in 2025. The Ohio Domestic Violence Network (ODVN) reports that more than 188,000 Ohioans are victims of intimate partner violence each year. According to the most recent available statistics, Ohio experienced more than 114 fatalities as a result of domestic violence from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024.

Challenges

Funding for supportive programs continues to remain low in Ohio, which leads to a lack of shelter space, supportive items, counseling and supportive services such as advocates and forensic nurse examiners.

Additionally, lack of reporting and awareness about domestic violence and domestic violence services means that survivors are not receiving the care and support they need and deserve.

How to Make a Difference

Here are a few of the many ways we can work together to decrease or prevent domestic violence:

  • Listen to and believe survivors.

  • Understand consent.

  • Educate yourself on domestic violence.

  • Educate youth about creating and maintaining healthy relationships.

  • Share your knowledge and resources with others in your community.

  • Promote healthy relationships in your family, workplace and community.

In addition, victim advocacy programs like the Serenity Program at Aultman Hospital respond to patients experiencing violence. These programs work with law enforcement, EMS and other organizations to help spread education and awareness to local communities.

Specially trained forensic nurses collect evidence that will be later used in court, and they can testify on behalf of the victims. These nurses also provide community education and are experts in human trafficking, strangulation and stalking.

Remember: Domestic violence is never okay. You are not alone, and help is available.
