Caring for Lymphedema

Today, we recognize the 31st annual World Lymphedema Day. Established by the National Lymphedema Network, this day is dedicated to raising awareness about how lymphedema affects people’s lives.

The lymphatic system is a network of tiny tube-like vessels and organs called lymph nodes. This network carries lymph, a clear fluid that contains white blood cells, throughout your body. The lymphatic system is part of your immune system, which helps to protect your body by fighting infection.

Lymphedema is chronic swelling that commonly occurs in arms, legs, the abdomen and/or the head and neck. “This can often happen after surgeries, cancer or infections and means the network of lymph nodes and vessels is not working fully,” said Jessica Arney, occupational therapist, certified lymphedema therapist at Aultman Therapy Services.

This buildup of excess fluid in the tissues is not normal and should be reported to your healthcare provider right away if you have recently undergone surgery or cancer treatment. Ask about treatment options and what you can do to keep the swelling from getting worse.

Lymphedema can affect a person’s ability to complete daily activities since it makes moving the affected limb difficult. “Swelling caused by lymphedema can also affect a person’s emotional well-being when their clothes, shoes or jewelry don’t fit,” Arney said.

Lymphedema therapists offer multiple treatment options for patients dealing with chronic swelling. Depending on the severity or cause of the swelling, therapists use one or more of the following treatment options:

  • Compression wear

  • Manual lymphatic drainage

  • Exercise

Lymphedema is often associated with breast cancer treatment because lymph nodes and vessels under the arm are removed during mastectomies or are damaged during radiation therapy. “Aultman offers breast cancer rehabilitation to address post-operative and post-radiation pain, motion limitations and swelling,” Arney said.

If you or a loved one suffers from lymphedema, the Aultman Lymphedema Care Clinic can help. With a physician’s referral, expert therapists can help prevent and manage the condition, reduce the symptoms and improve your quality of life.
