Beyond the Stigma – National Recovery Month
Recovery is not a destination, but a continuous process of growth and healing. It requires courage, support and access to effective care. That’s why September is National Recovery Month, an annual awareness event that highlights treatment and recovery from substance use disorder and mental health conditions.
Aultman plays a vital role in providing comprehensive, compassionate and stigma-free treatment of substance use and mental health conditions. National Recovery Month is a great time to reflect on the incredible strength and resilience of those on their recovery journey and acknowledge the progress made, the challenges still ahead and our continued commitment to supporting individuals and families affected by substance use and mental health disorders. Some of these disorders include:
Opioid Use Disorder (OUD)
OUD is a complex and devastating disease that continues to impact countless individuals, families and communities. Given the prevalence of opioid use disorder and its impact on all aspects of health, it is important to meet those with OUD where they are at and treat it with the same urgency as other chronic illnesses. Medication management options include:
- Naltrexone
- Buprenorphine/naloxone
- Methadone
Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD)
AUD is a widespread and often misunderstood chronic disease that affects millions of people across the country. It is important to do routine screenings to provide early interventions for patients struggling with alcohol use. Evidence-based treatment options include:
- Medications: naltrexone, acamprosate, disulfiram, gabapentin and topiramate.
- Behavioral therapies: cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing.
Stimulant Use Disorder
Stimulant Use Disorder is a serious and growing public health concern impacting an increasing number of individuals and communities. Unlike OUD, there are currently no FDA-approved medications for the treatment of stimulant use disorder. This makes Aultman’s focus on a combination of behavioral therapies, harm reduction and integrated care even more critical.
Mental Health
Mental health diagnoses commonly affect physical health and quality of life, so it’s important to address mental health concerns when they arise, in addition to routine screenings.
Emergency Department – Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Program
Aultman Hospital in Canton has taken a big step to improving care for those with substance use disorders by adding a substance use navigator and substance use disorder pharmacist.
