Lymphedema 030316

Aultman Offers Specialized Treatment for Lymphedema

According to the National Lymphedema Network, up to 10 million Americans suffer from lymphedema and lymphatic diseases. Lymphedema is an abnormal buildup of protein-rich lymph fluid in the tissues of a person with a compromised lymph system.

“Lymphedema may develop due to a malformation of the lymphatics at birth or due to damage of the lymph system from surgery, radiation therapy or physical trauma such as a vehicle accident or chronic infection,” said Anna Frum, OTR/L, CLT who specializes in treatment of lymphedema disorders for patients in the Aultman Lymphedema Management Clinic.

The lymphatic system includes tiny vessels under your skin, lymph nodes and deeper lymph vessels. “The lymph system serves the body by removing cellular waste, fighting infections, maintaining fluid levels and cleaning/filtering fluids for recirculation,” Anna explained. “If you have a sore throat and your neck lymph nodes feel swollen, that’s your lymphatic system at work – protecting you and helping you to get better.”

Aultman offers specialized care for patients with lymphedema, treating more than 80 patients each year. The Aultman Lymphedema Care Clinic is located at 2615 Tuscarawas St. W, in Canton, in the Aultman Tusc facility.

“We have three certified lymphedema therapists,” Anna shared. “Our specialists are occupational therapy clinicians: two are occupational therapists (OTR/L) and one is a certified occupational therapy assistant (COTA/L). In addition, they earned certification through the Norton School of Lymphatics.”

“Though lymphedema is typically not painful, patients with lymphedema have persistent swelling, usually in an arm or leg, that feels tight or heavy, and decreases limb flexibility,” Anna said. “Our goal is to help patients with lymphedema manage their condition, reduce their symptoms and improve their quality of life.”
