Volunteer Spotlight: Patty Harris

At Aultman, our volunteers are just one of the many groups that have helped us to lead our community to improved health over the last 125 years. Today, we'd like to introduce you to one of our dedicated volunteers - Patty Harris.

Where do you live?

I live in Perry Township in Canton, Ohio.

When did you begin volunteering at Aultman Health Foundation?

My first volunteering experience was as a high school student, delivering flowers to patient rooms. After high school, I attended Aultman School of Nursing and eventually worked at Aultman for 46 years, until my retirement in 2010. At my retirement party, I was given a folder of information about volunteering opportunities at Aultman Hospital. In my mind, I thought, “After 46 years of working here, I am not going to volunteer.” But, two months after retirement, I realized I missed coming here every day.

In what department do you volunteer?

I volunteer on the third floor in the MICU family waiting room.

How did you decide to be a volunteer?

Two months after retirement, I recognized that I missed the people – the interactions with staff, families and patients. Also, after dedicating most of my life to Aultman, I realized I wanted to maintain my relationship with my Aultman family and be a part of the continued success.

What do you like best about volunteering?

It makes me feel good to know that I can make a difference in people’s lives, whether they are an employee, family member or patient. The highlight for me is that every Wednesday, the cleaning lady lets me vacuum the waiting room for her since she knows it’s one of my favorite chores!

What are some of your hobbies/interests outside of volunteering?

I have several different interests. Besides spending time with my family, I enjoy sewing, playing the piano, working in the yard, art, visiting Amish country, shopping and attending my Sunday school class.

Tell us about your loved ones (parents, spouse, children, grandchildren).

I have been married to Bob for 16 years. I have three grown children and seven grandchildren, and I enjoy spending time with all of my family. In fact, my husband and I have a standing lunch date at Bob Evans every Sunday with my brother, Bill.

Tell us something interesting about yourself that many of your friends may not know.

When my mother was pregnant with me, my father was stationed out of state. Because she didn’t want to go to the hospital without my father, she chose to deliver me at home – on my grandmother’s dining room table!
