At Aultman, it takes a team to lead our community to improved health. Today, we'd like to introduce you to one of our dedicated volunteers – Karl Heege.

Where do you live (city/area)?

I grew up in Cleveland. My teaching degree brought me to this area, and I have called North Canton my home for the last 30 years.

When did you begin volunteering at Aultman Health Foundation?

I started volunteering at Aultman Hospital just over a year ago.

In what department do you volunteer?

I am a part of the Happy Tails program, along with my 4-year-old English bulldog, Ellie. We spend our time in Infusion Therapy and the Cancer Center visiting with patients, family members and the staff.

How did you decide to be a volunteer?

I had Ellie in puppy training, and while I was there, I met another person in the group who volunteers through Happy Tails.

What do you like best about volunteering?

I enjoy seeing the smiles. When I bring Ellie through the hospital, she is always brightening someone’s day.

When I visit a patient room and the family members have been vigilantly sitting by their side, Ellie is a nice distraction from the monotony. She’s definitely a conversation starter! A family member once told me, “She’s such a wonderful distraction from what we are dealing with.”

What are some of your hobbies/interests outside of volunteering?

I enjoy gardening, but I mostly spend time with my three English bulldogs – Ellie, Jake and Bacchus. They are all rescue dogs who inherited environmental behavioral problems. They have been through a lot of training, but they still keep me very busy!

Tell us about your loved ones.

My wife is Maria, and she works for the United Way. My wife’s sister, Chris, who has Down syndrome, lives with us. We have been her caretaker for more than 20 years.

Tell us something interesting about yourself that many of your friends may not know.

My wife and I met in jail. Before you comment, let me explain! I was teaching at Indian River when I met the volunteer coordinator – my future wife.
