Be a Grocery Guru

Do you have trouble navigating the aisles of your grocery store? Here are some tips for smart shopping and healthy eating to help you keep going with that New Year’s resolution!

  • Plan your meals for the week, and make a shopping list. Keep the shopping list in a convenient location where family members can add to it.
  • Read the food labels. Ingredients on labels are required to be listed in order of how much of each ingredient is in the food. Ingredients listed first are present in the largest amount.
  • Avoid shopping while hungry.
  • Beware of prepared foods. Packaged pasta mixes, seasoned rice, dinner in a box and snacks are often heavy on the fat calories, sodium and trans-fatty acids.
  • Do a perimeter search so you can fill your cart with produce, bakery, meat and dairy products:
    1. Produce: Diets rich in fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases. Try to get five servings a day! Fresh fruits and vegetables are best, then frozen and then canned.
    2. Dairy: Choose skim milk, 1 percent milk, low-fat buttermilk, low-fat yogurt and low-fat cheese.
    3. Meat: Select lean, well-trimmed cuts. Meat graded “select” has less fat than “choice” or “prime” grades. Limit high-fat meats like ribs, corned beef, sausage and bacon.
    4. Bread: Look for cereal with at least 2 grams of fiber, 8 grams or less of sugar and 2 grams or less of fat per serving. Look for the words “whole wheat” or "whole grain” at the beginning of the ingredient listing.
    5. Deli: Sliced roast beef, turkey and lean ham are good, low-fat choices. Pressed meats, lean ham and Canadian bacon are low-fat, but high in sodium.
