The Flu and You

The winter months have everyone washing their hands and covering their coughs – but is that enough to keep you from feeling the effects of the flu? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu activity is currently high, and unfortunately, it is expected to continue for the next few weeks.

As part of our seasonal precautions in the hospital, Aultman has already begun participating in a Stark County-wide initiative to protect patients, visitors and staff during flu season. Due to the increase in flu activity, visitors under the age of 14 are currently not permitted in Aultman facilities to help stop the spread of the flu.

The flu is very contagious. Most healthy adults may be able to infect other people beginning one day before flu symptoms develop and up to seven days after they become sick. People with the virus can spread it by coughing or sneezing, and individuals can also contract the flu by touching their mouths or their nose after touching something with the virus on it - such as doorknobs, tables or someone else’s hands. However, there are steps we can all take to stop the flu in its tracks. Stay healthy in Northeast Ohio this flu season by following just a few of the tips listed below.

Get the flu vaccine.

The flu vaccine is one of the most trusted ways to prevent yourself and others from getting sick with the flu. According to the CDC, getting the vaccine reduces the risk of contracting the flu illness by about 50 to 60 percent among the overall population – and it’s not too late to get your shot!

Stay away from people who are sick.

Though we all want to offer a helping hand to friends and loved ones who have fallen ill, during flu season one of the best courses of action may be to let them rest and give them space. If you are ill, be sure to stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone.

Wash your hands.

It sounds simple, but this time of year it’s important to wash your hands often with soap and warm water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub to remove germs.

Cover your nose and mouth.

People who have the flu can spread the virus by coughing or sneezing. To prevent germs from spreading through the air, be sure to cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your arm when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

Avoid touching your face.

During this time of year, it’s important to avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth as often as possible, as germs are easily spread and contracted this way.

With just a few preventive actions, you can drastically reduce your likelihood of falling ill this flu season.
