Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Colon cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the U.S. among men and women combined. In fact, the American Cancer Society estimates that 135,430 new cases of colorectal cancer will be diagnosed in 2017.

Early colorectal cancer often has no symptoms or warning signs. This is why it is especially important to start regular screening for colon cancer at age 50. The American Cancer Society also reminds us that screening tests offer the most powerful opportunity to prevent colorectal cancer or detect the disease early.

While men and women are equally affected by colorectal cancers, most cancers are diagnosed in those aged 50 and over. Also, African-Americans have the highest rates of colon cancer. Other risk factors include personal history of polyps, heredity, obesity, physical inactivity, high-fat diets, smoking and alcohol use. And, while you can’t change your genetics or your family history, you can help reduce your risk for colon cancer.

The American Cancer Society offers the following tips for reducing your risk:

  • Eat a healthy diet with an emphasis on plant-based foods.
  • Stay at a healthy weight.
  • Avoid tobacco.
  • Limit alcohol intake.
  • Increase physical activity level.
