Impotence Study

What is an impotence study?

An impotence study is a non-invasive test using blood pressure cuffs. No radiation, dyes, or needles are used for this exam.

Why am I having an impotence study?

This exam checks to see if the arterial flow into the penis is compromised causing the inability to have an erection.

How your exam is performed:

  • You will be asked a brief history relating to the exam.
  • You will be asked to remove any clothing that covers the area(s) being examined.
  • You will then be asked to lie on your back and cover up with a gown or blanket.
  • A sonographer will wrap blood pressure cuffs on your arms and thighs. Blood pressures will then be taken at each location. You will feel the cuffs getting tighter as the pressures are taken. After these pressures are taken, the arm and thigh cuffs will be removed.
  • A blood pressure cuff will then be placed on the penis along with a small sensor and a pressure will be taken.
  • You may hear your blood flowing while the sonographer takes pressures.
  • After the test you may go home unless you have other scheduled tests.
  • A physician will interpret your test results. The doctor who ordered your test will then receive a report and discuss the results with you.
