Vascular Screening

The Aultman Vascular Lab offers noninvasive screenings to assist in early detection of vascular disease.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening

AAA Screening

The aorta is the largest artery in the body. It carries blood to the abdomen, pelvis and legs. The aorta can sometimes become weak and start to enlarge. This is called an aneurysm. With early detection, the aneurysm can be treated before it becomes fatal.

Carotid Screening

Carotid Artery Screening

The carotid arteries provide the main blood supply for the brain. Sometimes these arteries can narrow due to a buildup of plaque (a fatty substance). As the artery becomes narrower, your risk for a stroke becomes greater.

What to Expect (AAA and Carotid Artery Screenings)

For these tests, you will lie on your back on the exam table. The vascular technician, called a sonographer, will apply a small amount of gel to either your neck or abdomen. A small transducer (wand) will be moved over the area being examined, forming pictures on the ultrasound machine.

Before the Screening

There is no preparation required for the carotid artery screening. For six hours prior to the aorta screening, please do not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum.

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) Screening

PAD Screening

Arterial blockage can develop in the arteries of the legs. This decreases the amount of blood flowing to the legs and can cause cramping, aching or a tired feeling in your legs while walking or exercising.

What to Expect (PAD)

You will lie on your back on the exam table. The vascular sonographer will apply blood pressure cuffs on your ankles and arms. The sonographer will the obtain blood pressures on your arms and ankles using a small probe to listen for your pulse. The cuffs squeeze but only for a short time.

Results

You will be given a preliminary report by the vascular sonographer when the screening is finished. The screening exams will be reviewed by a qualified physician, and a signed final report will be sent to your primary care physician. If you are in need of a primary care physician, please call the Physician Referral Line at 330-363-6254

Scheduling

Call Aultman Centralized Scheduling at 330-363-6288 to make your screening appointment. Let the scheduler know you're interested in vascular health screenings and which tests you would like to have.

Costs

Each test costs just $25. Vascular screenings are not covered by insurance and payment must be received prior to your appointment. You can make a payment the day of your screening by stopping by the Patient Accounts payment window on the first floor of the main hospital near the Cancer Center. Cash, check and credit cards are accepted.
