Vestibular Therapy

Vestibular therapy is a systematic method used to evaluate and treat problems relating to the inner ear and balance center in the brain. This type of therapy is aimed directly at improving the functional relationship between the inner ear, brain, eyes, muscles and nerves through central nervous system compensation.

In addition, vestibular therapy can help decrease mechanical problems in the inner ear that may cause dizziness. Patients who are not sure why they are having dizziness issues should first see their physician.

Some of the most common dizziness and balance disorders are:

• BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo)
• Cervicogenic dizziness
• Vestibular neuritis and labyrinthitis
• Disequilibrium of Aging
• Disuse disequilibrium
• Migraine-related dizziness
• CVA (Stroke)
• MS (Multiple Sclerosis)
• Anxiety

Health care professionals providing vestibular therapy will choose the most appropriate form. The four major types of vestibular therapy are:

• Repositioning
• Adaptation
• Substitution
• Habituation

How to Prepare for Vestibular Therapy:

  • Wear cool, comfortable clothing and walking shoes.
  • Bring the therapy prescription from your physician.
  • Bring your insurance card, photo ID and completed health history form.
  • If needed, confirm your transportation.
