Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy enables patients to perform activities of daily living across the life span. In the inpatient setting, this often involves maximizing independence with self-care tasks such as bathing and dressing. Aultman Therapy Services also offers occupational therapy in an outpatient setting to help you continue working toward your goals of living better with injury, illness or disability.

Who provides occupational therapy?

Occupational therapy is provided by state-licensed occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants. If you are a patient in the hospital or skilled facility, your physician will determine if you would benefit from occupational therapy.

What to Expect From Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy services typically include an individualized evaluation, during which you will work with the occupational therapist to determine your goals. Occupational therapists will design customized interventions to improve your ability to perform daily activities and reach your goals. Your occupational therapist will also provide ongoing evaluation to ensure that the goals are being met or make changes to the plan for therapy.

How Occupational Therapy Can Help

  • Improve motion, strength, coordination or pain after injury or surgery of the arm or hand.
  • Increase independence in self-care and household responsibilities after a stroke or a progressive condition like Parkinson’s.
  • Address changes in cognition or vision due to stroke, head injury, dementia or other illnesses.
  • Maximize independence and promote wellness through education on ways to modify daily tasks at home or work.

If you think you would benefit from occupational therapy in an outpatient facility, discuss your concerns with your physician and ask if you would benefit from occupational therapy. Feel free to call one of our locations if you have questions about how occupational therapy might help.
