Blood
Aultman is partnering with LifeShare, a non-profit, FDA-licensed, independent blood service organization to provide a safe and local blood supply for our community. Each year, more than 15,000 units of blood are collected and processed at Aultman. Check out the information below to learn how you can help!
Why Donate
One blood donation can help save up to three lives. Every year, more than four million Americans need blood transfusions. The lifesaving donations go to surgery patients, accident victims, premature babies and patients with serious illnesses like cancer and leukemia.
Eligibility
We follow all FDA and regulatory guidelines to ensure the safety of our blood donors and recipients. Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be 17 years or older, show identification and be in good health - with a normal temperature, blood pressure, pulse and iron level. With parental consent, 16-year-olds are also able to donate.
If you plan to donate, here are some tips to ensure a positive experience:
- Get ample sleep the night before you donate.
- Eat a healthy breakfast or lunch, avoiding fatty foods.
- Drink extra water and caffeine-free fluids.
- Eat iron-rich foods including green, leafy vegetables, lean meat and dried fruits.
Donation Types
Whole Blood Donations
Whole blood is comprised of three main components: red blood cells, platelets and plasma. Providing whole blood is the traditional donation method, and donors are able to give every 56 days.
Apheresis Donations
We offer an automated donation process called "apheresis." It allows blood to be drawn and separated, so a specific blood component can be collected. Platelets, plasma and red cells are collected using this automated process.
Platelets are the most common components drawn through apheresis. The platelets are harvested, while almost all red cells and plasma are returned to the donor through the same needle.
One apheresis donor can give six to eight times as many platelets as a whole blood donor. Donations can be given every 48 hours because the human body replaces platelets so rapidly.
How to Donate
Donors may walk in to the donor location between the times listed below. You can also schedule an appointment by calling 330-489-1076 or by visiting www.LifeShare.cc.
