You Make a Difference: Diane

Congratulations to Diane of Memorial 6E. She recently received a You Make a Difference award. Here is her nomination, submitted by Laura: YMAD Diane Greer

I would like to nominate Diane for the You Make a Difference Award. I spent less than 15 minutes with Diane this afternoon but couldn't think of a more deserving individual. As part of the Rapid Response Team, it is my responsibility to assist with transfers to a higher level of care. Diane is a nurse on 6E and was taking care of a sick young lady who required transfer to the ICU. Upon my arrival, she had everything prepared for her transfer that is required of the bedside nurse. But, she went above and beyond this. She took care of this young lady like she was her own daughter. She was pleasant, kind and showed the family that she genuinely cared. In the two days caring for this lady, she had formed a relationship with the patient and her mother and it was clear that they would not soon forget Diane.

The patient was discharged less than 24 hours prior and had to be readmitted due to a surgical site infection. This had the family very frustrated and upset with Aultman. When the patient's mother walked in the first day, showing her anger and frustration towards Diane, she took it as an opportunity to calmly express her empathy for their situation and explain the plan of care. Diane was able to diffuse the situation and calm the mother's fears. By the time the patient was transferred to the ICU, the mother and patient were asking if Diane could come with them and take care of her there. Diane received big hugs from the patient and her mother, and to me, this speaks volumes. Diane exemplified everything I wish to be as a nurse. She was able to show empathy and kindness with a smile on her face. She is hard-working, knowledgeable, yet humble. She offered the family a positive, caring attitude and never displayed any expression of frustration with having such a sick patient that needed transferred to a higher level of care. Diane is the perfect example of an outstanding nurse.”
