Sandra Shew Aultman Compassionate Care Center Volunteer
05/22/2018

Volunteer Spotlight: Sandra Shew

At Aultman, it takes a team to lead our community to improved health. Today, we'd like to introduce you to one of our dedicated volunteers – Sandra Shew.

Where do you live (city/area)?

I grew up in Tennessee. I met my husband at the University of Tennessee, and after graduation, we moved to Massillon – his hometown. We have lived in Jackson Township for the past 30 years.

When did you begin volunteering at Aultman Health Foundation?

I began volunteering at the Compassionate Care Center (CCC) seven years ago.

In what department do you volunteer?

I volunteer every Wednesday at the CCC. I help with a variety of things, from bathing patients and passing out linens to delivering meals, sitting with patients and other patient-care tasks.

How did you decide to be a volunteer?

I served on the Aultman Women’s Board when funds were being raised to build the CCC. Around the time that the CCC opened, one of my dear friends passed away from cancer. Our sons had been close friends as well, so to honor her and her son, I decided to start volunteering at the CCC.

What do you like best about volunteering?

The people – patients, families and employees. I consider it an honor to be a witness to a person’s last days and to hear their stories and memories from family members.

What are some of your hobbies/interests outside of volunteering?

When I’m not volunteering, I enjoy spending time with my family or playing tennis.

Tell us about your loved ones (parents, spouse, children, grandchildren).

I have been married to my husband, David, for 30 years as of this July. We have three children. Our daughter, Sarah, lives in Columbus with her husband, Jon. Our twin sons, Franklin and Sam, both recently finished their first year of college; Franklin is studying Arabic at the Naval Academy and Sam is in the Fisher School of Business at The Ohio State University.

Tell us something interesting about yourself that many of your friends may not know.

Most of my friends don’t know that I played centerfield on back-to-back state champion softball teams in high school.
