Volunteer Spotlight: Celia Dutter

At Aultman, our volunteers are just one of the many groups that have helped us to lead our community to improved health over the last 125 years. Today, we'd like to introduce you to one of our dedicated volunteers – Celia Dutter.

Where do you live (city/area)?

I grew up in Wayne County, but for more than 50 years, I have been a resident of North Canton.

When did you begin volunteering at Aultman Health Foundation?

I have actually volunteered at Aultman during two different times in my life. The first was back in the 70’s when my kids started school. But after volunteering a short time, I decided to go back to college and began a career in legal secretarial. I eventually retired and came back to Aultman to volunteer in 2008.

In what department do you volunteer?

I have volunteered on the stroke unit for 10 years. Because I enjoy staying active, 5 North is a perfect fit for me. I am here for four hours every Tuesday, and the staff keeps me busy stocking rooms, tending to patients and helping the nurses however I am able.

How did you decide to be a volunteer?

After retirement and the passing of my mother, I realized I had too much time on my hands. I had volunteered at various places throughout my life, but I enjoyed volunteering at Aultman in the past and decided to come back.

What do you like best about volunteering?

First and foremost, it’s about the patients. I just enjoy helping people. Also, the nurses are so busy, and I am glad to help them however I can. They appreciate the work I do. Not too long ago, a nurse said to me, “Tuesday is my favorite day to come to work because I know that you’ll be here.”

What are some of your hobbies/interests outside of volunteering?

I am an avid sports fan, so I enjoy watching a lot of football and basketball. I also find time to read, garden, crochet and bake goodies for my 5 North family.

Tell us about your loved ones (parents, spouse, children, grandchildren).

I have been widowed since 1999. I have two children, Sheri and Steve, and two granddaughters, Melissa and Allison.

Tell us something interesting about yourself that many of your friends may not know.

I am a 1957 graduate of Dalton High School. A few years back, I started sending emails to my classmates from time to time to keep them updated on weddings, births, deaths, etc. My classmates got used to the emails. By default, I became the editor of the official “monthly newsletter.”
