Back to school sleep

Back to School Tip: Sleep

We are half-way through summer, and you’ve probably relaxed your kids’ sleep schedule a bit. The first day of school is just around the corner, and right now is a great time to help your kids adjust their sleep schedule for the school year.

Why is it important to establish good sleep habits before the school year begins? Studies show that sleep-deprived children can become hyper or irritable leading to trouble concentrating in school. According to KidsHealth, children in elementary school need nine to 12 hours of sleep to be at their best, and teens in middle and high school need eight to 10 hours. Getting the right amount of sleep helps students concentrate better, reduces daytime sleepiness and improves their memory function. These are the key ingredients to success in the classroom!

Here are some tips to help your kids get on a good sleep schedule:

  • A couple weeks before school starts, set bedtimes incrementally earlier each night. Wake your child earlier each morning until you’ve reached your schedule for the school year.
  • Once you’ve established your school year routine, stick to it.
  • Encourage relaxing bedtime activities, such as reading quietly or taking a bath.
  • Make sure your child’s bedroom is dark and quiet.
  • Avoid keeping TVs and other electronic devices in your child’s bedroom.
  • Avoid foods and drinks with caffeine within six hours of bedtime.
  • Encourage physical activity and exercise during the day, but not within two hours of bedtime.

No matter what your child's age, be sure to establish a bedtime routine that encourages good sleep habits.
